Regular cleaning and waterproofing of leather helps maintain its durability and beautiful appearance. It also masks minor scuffs and scratches. Below are some helpful tips.
- Clean first, then impregnate.
- Full-grain leather – remove dirt with a water-dampened cotton cloth. You can use products designed for this type of leather. Avoid excessive moisture. Once the bag is completely dry, lubricate it with cream, wax, or another product designed for full-grain leather care. Without proper lubrication, the leather will become brittle, susceptible to scratches and cracks, and will absorb moisture.
- Patent leather – remove dirt with a water-dampened cotton cloth. You can use products designed for this type of leather. Do not grease patent leather, as its surface structure is closed and does not absorb liquids from the surrounding environment.
- Suede and nubuck (rough leather) are particularly difficult to clean, so try to avoid getting them wet or stained. Remove dirt using a special rubber or block designed for rough leather. Use these gently and carefully to avoid damaging the leather. Protect against moisture with a waterproof spray. Remember that suede or nubuck impregnation products may darken the leather.
- Zippers, fittings, sequins – do not spray or rub impregnation agents into the leather as they may cause discoloration or dulling.
- Drying – A wet bag should be dried at room temperature, away from heat sources (radiators, fans). Do not use an electric dryer.
- Storage – To prevent deformation, fill the bag with white wrapping paper or bubble wrap. Avoid contact with other materials or leather, as the leather may discolor.
- Discoloration – Remember that leather handbags discolor very easily, especially when soaked in water or sweat. Avoid contact with jeans, other leathers, or other materials. Also, protect the inside of your handbag – store pens, pens, and pencils in a case.
- Weight – Avoid overloading your bag. Even shopping bags shouldn't be used to carry heavy items. Yes, they're roomy, but remember – luxury items require proper handling to stay that way. Too much weight will stretch the handles, weaken the seams, and change the bag's shape and appearance.
- Cosmetics and perfumes – cosmetic products can cause discoloration of the skin or lining. Be especially careful with mascara, lipstick, perfumes, toilet waters, antiperspirants, and nail polishes.
- Removing dried stains, refinishing, restoring the original color, and many other tasks are best left to the professionals. Tinted dye, liquid leather, or similar products, which are widely available, require a steady hand, knowledge, and experience. Therefore, we encourage you to take advantage of the cleaning and maintenance services offered by companies that specialize in this type of leather goods.
